Yin Yoga Teacher Training Course by Sci Yoga

Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of Yoga where postures are held for a slightly longer period, i.e., 3-5 minutes. The term Yin comes from the Yin and Yang philosophy of traditional Chinese medicine (called TCM). As per this Yin and Yang philosophy, Yin means passive energies, representing the moon, cool, calming, and dark energies. Whereas Yang means active energies, representing the sun, hot, agile, and bright energies. Yin and Yang together balance everything in this world. Therefore, Yin Yoga is all about balancing the solar and lunar energies of the body. Furthermore, the movement of Yin and Yang also underlies the five-element theory of TCM, which we briefly cover in our Yin Yoga teacher training course.

Yin Yoga and Fascia Connection

Let’s now address the elephant in the room, which is the Yin Yoga and Fascia connection. Every time I discuss Yin Yoga with anyone, they ask what fascia is and how Yin Yoga helps to stretch it. Let’s understand and uncover this thing.

First of all, fascia is a deep connective tissue, lying under our skin. It binds and separates our muscles and different organs. Simply put, it is like a covering that wraps our muscles and their muscle fibres (spindles). As fascia wraps our muscles, it is also called myofascial. Fascia depends on muscles for a lot of its functioning; a muscle contains almost 30% fascia. We have over six hundred muscles in our bodies, and we are able to distinguish them because of fascia.

Fascia has sensors of its own, through which it can assess the position of our muscles and their movements. Hence, fascia is truly vital for our body. However, as surprising as it may sound, fascia was poorly understood until very recently. Before we understood fascia, surgeons used to operate on people without giving much thought to fascia. However, with time, biomedical science realised that even when surgery was successful, people still complained of limitations in their bodies and range of motion. Later, it was discovered that fascia is behind all these movement limitations, and this opened like a Pandora's box to biomedical science.

Fascia covers our body as if we are wearing a suit on our bodies. Therefore, even if somebody has pain in an area, it may travel to another area, which we call distant pain referrals. Yin Yoga is believed to be helpful for releasing the fascia. Many people share their experience after practising Yin Yoga, and they claim that they feel their range of motion and mobility have increased after practising Yin Yoga. As per Yin Yoga, fascia is actually a Yin tissue of the body, whereas muscles are more dynamic, hence a Yang tissue of the body. Overall, Yin Yoga has a deep connection with fascia.

Benefits of Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga feels so amazing on your body that you want to practice it every day. Our students, who have become Yin Yoga teachers, often mention that they notice more male students attending Yin Yoga classes than in any Yoga class. This symbolises that Yin Yoga works really well in every population. Let’s see some of the benefits that Yin Yoga has to offer:

Yin Yoga Can Reduce the Risk of Cardiovascular Conditions and Cancer

There are conditions that researchers describe as Non-communicable diseases, including Cardiovascular conditions, cancers, etc. In a study(Daukantaitė D. et al. 2018[1]), it was concluded that even short-term Yin Yoga practice can decrease the risks of these diseases.

Yin Yoga has Loyal Students

Yin Yoga definitely gives you loyal students who show up almost every day to your classes. What is interesting about Yin Yoga is that about 1 out of 10 people who practice Yoga have experienced Yin Yoga classes. Despite this, Yin Yoga is very successful. Because people who come to Yin Yoga classes love it. They love how it feels on their bodies. A good Yin Yoga class feels like a warm day after a freezing winter. And once you start liking Yin Yoga, there is no going back.

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Recently, a study published in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association highlighted that Yin Yoga can help reduce stress and anxiety in students (Lemay V. et al., 2021[2]). Therefore, Yin Yoga can also be used as a tool that helps with mental health issues. However, this study highlighted that we need to practice Yin Yoga for at least six weeks to gain these benefits.

Yin Yoga also induces Mindfulness

Yin Yoga can also improve mindfulness (Lemay V. et al., 2021[2]). Mindfulness is the ability of a person to stay in the present and actively absorb what is happening around. This is vital for numerous reasons, including social interactions, learning new things, utilising resources properly, and more.

Yin Yoga can help overcome Adverse Situations

Some studies also indicate that practising Yin Yoga can be a way to overcome negative situations that one has to go through in one's life. As humans, we know that we can almost never avoid adverse situations. However, one thing that we can do right is to change our response in such times. With practice like Yin Yoga, we are able to cope with every adverse situation with ease.

Yin Yoga can help stretch the Fascia

It is believed that Yin Yoga stretches our fascia. For the best results, we suggest pairing Yin Yoga with the self-myofascia releasing technique (SMR technique). The SMR technique is where you use a roller, a tennis ball, or an acupuncture ball to put pressure on your muscles. The good thing is that we include the SMR technique in our Yin Yoga session. We also help you with its seamless integration into your Yin Yoga practice. This ensures that you can stretch and release your fascia.

You can release emotions through Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga acts as the best bet to release your emotions. Trust me, I’ve seen many people getting emotional, crying, and sobbing after a Yin Yoga class. It is very difficult to understand this feeling scientifically, but those who experience it know it. Yin Yoga helps calm down our trapped emotions through a mechanism, not well-known but well-experienced.

Yin Yoga Cues

With our course, you also learn to give proper cues during your Yin Yoga sessions. This is critical for Yin Yoga teachers because not everyone wants you to stay mute during the sessions. For beginners, they need cues; they need your voice as an anchor to feel secure. Not everyone can let go in their first session, so as a Yin Yoga teacher, you need to know the power of your cues. You need to know what the rules are for effective cueing. All of this is covered through our Yin Yoga Teacher Training Course.

What are the Cues?

Cues are instructions that guide your students to the correct Yin Yoga pose or shape. These cues can have three types:

  • Verbal cues (Speech)
  • Visual cues (Yoga demonstration)
  • Adjustment cues (Hands-on or props)
Examples of Some Easy Yin Yoga Cues
  • Accept the stretch without any stress.
  • Hold the pose, but do not hold your breath.
  • Allow yourself to go deeper into the relaxation.
  • Find the edge of your comfort and discomfort.
  • Let all your stress melt on the mat.
  • Let the props hold your body rather than you holding yourself.
  • Completely surrender to the mat, the floor, gravity, and Mother Earth.
  • Inhale deeply and exhale completely.
